« Alors que je cherchais quelle image peindre ici, je suis tombée sur cette photo de moi, attrapée par mon ami, Benjamin Stene, dans une baie niçoise. J’y ai d’abord vu le fil des bras, parallèle à la pente du toit, un axe de suspension pour y accrocher une flottaison. J’en portais le souvenir corporel intact, la marche qui nous avait mené là, la fraîcheur incroyable, la grâce d’y être. Je l’ai imprimée, et posé là (…)

Ce n’est que quelques jours plus tard que j’ai vu ce qui habitait réellement l’image. L’ombre que mon corps projetait sur le fond de la rivière, le rouge mordant de la robe : c’était le fantôme d’Ana Mendieta qui m’avait attrapé le regard.(…) Mon émotion pour son œuvre s’intensifie à l’approche du quarantenaire de sa mort. Le 8 septembre 1985, à l’âge de 36 ans, elle meurt d’une chute du 34ᵉ étage, dans des circonstances troubles d’une dispute conjugale violente. Son mari, l’artiste minimaliste Carl Andre, est accusé de meurtre mais acquitté. (…). Le mouvement “Where is Ana Mendieta?” est né de cette indignation : il dénonce la façon dont les violences faites aux femmes, les voix non-blanches, et les mémoires dissidentes sont effacées du récit dominant de l’art. »

"While I was looking for an image to paint here, I came across this photo of myself, taken by my friend, Benjamin Stene, in a bay near Nice. I first saw the thread of arms, parallel to the slope of the roof, an axis of suspension to attach a floatation. I carried the intact bodily memory of it, the walk that had brought us there, the incredible freshness, the grace of being there. I printed it and placed it there (…)

It was only a few days later that I saw what truly inhabited the image. The shadow my body cast on the riverbed, the biting red of the dress: it was the ghost of Ana Mendieta who had caught my eye. (…) My emotion for her work intensifies as we approach the fortieth anniversary of her death. On September 8, 1985, at the age of 36, she died after falling from the 34th floor, in the murky circumstances of a violent domestic dispute. Her husband, the minimalist artist Carl Andre, was accused of murder but acquitted. (…). The “Where is Ana Mendieta?” movement was born from this indignation: it denounces the way in which violence against women, non-white voices, and dissident memories are erased from the dominant narrative of art.
