Corn production in Ecuador and neighboring countries such as Peru, Colombia, and Bolivia faces multiple problems related to import dependence, price instability, and a lack of government support. Despite its cultural and nutritional importance, many small producers cannot compete with imported, often subsidized, corn, which affects its sustainability. Furthermore, limited access to technology, the effects of climate change, and pressure to introduce genetically modified seeds threaten biodiversity. Limited public investment and the displacement of traditional varieties by crops destined for agribusiness reinforce a loss of food sovereignty that directly affects rural communities.
