Verdwenen vaartbrug

 NEDERLANDS - Han Coussement, oorspronkelijk uit Vilvoorde, woont en werkt in Gent maar voelt zich nog steeds verbonden met de plek waar hij opgroeide. Voor hij aan een mural begint, onderzoekt Coussement de locatie. Hij wandelt rond, praat met mensen, maakt foto’s, en zoekt verder via het internet en de bibliotheek. Hij probeert zoveel mogelijk indrukken te verzamelen voor hij iets toevoegt aan de omgeving. Een cruciaal element voor een werk in de openbare ruimte is dat het iets bijdraagt, communiceert of accentueert. Voor de mural op de kademuur was de opdracht om te focussen op de geschiedenis van Vilvoorde. De bibliotheek van de stad bleek een goudmijn aan informatie te bezitten: boeken met oude prentkaarten, foto’s en specifieke informatie.  Aangezien de mural zich aan het water bevindt, vlakbij de Europabrug, is een referentie aan de verdwenen vaartbrug een logische keuze. Het belang van deze brug tijdens de wereldoorlogen inspireerde de artiest. In het werk staat de brug centraal, naast één van de ‘mouches’ of bootjes die er vroeger vaak passeerden. Met op de achtergrond een skyline van Vilvoorde met enkele typerende gebouwen zoals de kerk en de watertoren. Door te kiezen voor blauwtinten wil de kunstenaar zijn nostalgische ervaring tijdens het onderzoek in de bibliotheek overdragen op de kijker. Het is geen vergeelde afbeelding in een vergeten geschiedenisboek, maar ook geen hedendaags beeld.

ENGLISH - Han Coussement, originally from Vilvoorde, lives and works in Ghent but still feels connected to the place where he grew up. Before he starts working on a mural, Coussement examines the location. He walks around, talks to people, takes photos, and searches further via the internet and the library. He tries to collect as many impressions as possible before adding anything to the environment. A crucial element for a work in public space is that it contributes, communicates or accentuates something. The assignment for the mural on the quay wall was to focus on the history of Vilvoorde. The city's library turned out to have a goldmine of information: books with old postcards, photos and specific information. Since the mural is located on the water, near the Europa Bridge, a reference to the disappeared canal bridge is a logical choice. The importance of this bridge during the world wars inspired the artist. The bridge is central to the work, next to one of the 'mouches' or boats that often passed there in the past. With a skyline of Vilvoorde in the background with some typical buildings such as the church and the water tower. By choosing shades of blue, the artist wants to transfer his nostalgic experience during research in the library to the viewer. It is not a yellowed image in a forgotten history book, but neither is it a contemporary image.
