Barbara Helmer's work is about fractions, small parts of a whole. It's about light shining through an object, or reflecting on it. It refers to jewellery, quartz and minerals, chain links, and in a more abstract way to connected and linked forms. She tries different techniques to express the theme of her work. Technique is interesting to her in order to reach certain effects in the result she pursues. It determines the quality of the image. In big drawings she is often experimenting, searching for new forms and possibilities. Her murals are mostly made for specific spaces/locations. 

This wall in Tilburg is her fourth mural in a link chain series. The image is a collage edition about abstractions of link chain form and counter form, that oval and that pattern of shapes that make that oval. Back and front, as if you're looking through something. A play of color and shape, light and dark. The idea is that the links are connected and may or may not be thought through infinitely. It’s also a theme of small parts of a whole. The different surfaces also interact with the architecture. They don't fill the whole wall, so the building remains visible and the unpainted parts also form another layer.
The artist painted the wall with outdoor latex paint. Parts may look like they were sprayed but they’re not. 

Barbara Helmer was born in Eindhoven. She studied at the Willem de Kooning Academie. She now lives and works in Rotterdam.
