Kinderkunstlint / Children's Art Ribbon

Tilburg has a city link with the city of Matagalpa (Nicaragua). The Nicaraguan murals that have appeared in Tilburg since 1988 always have a particular social theme, a specific Global Goal. Since its establishment in 1984, contributing to global awareness has always been the main objective of both cities. The process of creating these murals is perhaps different from the usual artworks, but it is “unique” and with surprising results. On an established theme, a week before the painter arrives, the children make free drawings. The artist then chooses elements from these drawings and merges them into an overall design to appear on the wall. The children then paint that wall (or the panels that will appear on that wall) always in small groups under enthusiastic Nicaraguan guidance. But the most important thing is the learning and making process of the students with “someone from a distant land”.  An experience the students will take with them for the rest of their lives.

Tilburg heeft een stedenband met de stad Matagalpa (Nicaragua). De Nicaraguaanse muurschilderingen die sinds 1988 in Tilburg te zien zijn, hebben altijd een bepaald maatschappelijk thema, een specifieke Global Goal. Sinds de oprichting in 1984 is het vergroten van het mondiale bewustzijn altijd het belangrijkste doel van beide steden geweest. Het proces van het maken van deze muurschilderingen is misschien anders dan bij gebruikelijke kunstwerken, maar het is ‘uniek’ en levert verrassende resultaten op. Een week voordat de schilder arriveert, maken de kinderen vrije tekeningen rond een vastgesteld thema. De kunstenaar kiest vervolgens elementen uit deze tekeningen en voegt ze samen tot een totaalontwerp dat op de muur komt te staan. De kinderen schilderen vervolgens die muur (of de panelen die op die muur komen te staan), altijd in kleine groepjes onder enthousiaste Nicaraguaanse begeleiding. Maar het belangrijkste is het leer- en maakproces van de leerlingen met ‘iemand uit een ver land’. Een ervaring die de leerlingen de rest van hun leven zullen meedragen.
