The Cherry Eater

Selfportret of the painter Johan Ponsioen (1900-1969) who lived and worked in Tiel. We see the painter looking at us with cherries hanging around his ears (like local children used to do) and a cherry in his mouth. Original work was painted in 1935 and now presumably in Canada, private collection. It was inspired by a triptych (a three-part work of art) of his artistic friend Dik Ket. Paintings of Johan Ponsioen can be found in the museums of Tiel, Gorssel and Arnhem. The painters collective De Strakke Hand created this mural using a small picture of the original work.
The work of Johan Ponsioen belongs to the art movement Magical Realism.
This mural was made possible by a project of the municipality Tiel to make the city more attractive.
