Des Cartes

This collage is part of the “Au pied de la Lettre” series begun by Les Murs ont des Oreilles in the fall of 2020.
The expression “Des Cartes” is illustrated by the painting “Portrait of René Descartes,” created around 1649–1700 by Franz Hals and exhibited at the Louvre Museum in Paris. In this work, the collage artist replaced Descartes’ hair with a road map, creating a play on words between the philosopher’s name (Descartes) and the French expression “des cartes” (some maps).
The artwork’s colors have faded significantly over time, but it is still visible today.
