This collage is part of the series “Au pied de la Lettre” (To the Letter), started by Les Murs ont des Oreilles in the fall of 2020.
The expression “Un nez talon” is illustrated by the painting Portrait of a Young Woman, created between 1487 and 1488 by the Italian painter Domenico Ghirlandaio, on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
The collage artist altered the color of the headdress and the dress, then positioned a woman’s shoe at the spot of the nose, with the stiletto heel planted between the eyes.
The expression “un nez talon” literally translates as “a heel-shaped nose”, but the most natural English rendering is “a hooked nose” or “a downward-pointing nose”.
