Pirates Southend City 2026

🌊 FROM THE ESTUARY TO THE WALL. 🏴‍☠️🌊

For Southend City Jam, we went back to the maritime roots of Southend and brought the stories of the Thames Estuary to life through graffiti and street art.

Southend grew from small fishing communities along the estuary. For centuries, the surrounding waters, creeks, mudflats and sandbanks were the working environment of fishermen and sailors, but also of smugglers who knew the tides, channels and hidden routes like no one else.

And then, of course, there is Southend Pier — stretching far out into the Thames Estuary and now one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. The pier was built to allow boats to reach Southend despite the huge difference between high and low tide, and became an important connection between the city and the water.

We took this history and translated it into our own interpretation:
pirates battling the waves, creatures rising from the deep and the spirit of the estuary taking over the wall.

A piece about the sea, the people who lived from it, and the legends that grew around its waters.
