JUANA DE CASTILLA

Project carried out for Paredes que Hablan sierranorte.

A mural painting in Gargantilla de Lozoya (Madrid). In this town, Juana of Castilla married Carlos of Valois, Duke of Guyena and brother of King Louis XI of France, by proxy on October 26, 1470, at the age of just 8.

The mural depicts a portrait of Juana of Castile (known as "La Beltraneja") against a background of sober colors in keeping with the surroundings, alluding to the sitter's difficult life. This background, which also alludes to the flag of Castilla, includes calligraphy framed in an abstraction reminiscent of a medieval coffered ceiling.
