« Jùan Miguel de la Méditerranée »

MAYE travaille sur toile depuis une dizaine d’années, il n’a jamais abandonné les murs de son adolescence, sur lesquels il a découvert le graffiti au milieu des années 2000.

Son style caractéristique, aux personnages longilignes et biscornus, est immanquable : y flotte une atmosphère surréaliste qui nous emporte dans son univers poétique et rêveur. Artiste du Sud – né à Sète, habitant à Montpellier – ses œuvres ont pourtant envahi les rues de toute la France, depuis la Méditerranée jusqu’à la Bretagne, en passant par la capitale.

Qu’il joue de couleurs ou de noir et blanc, ses créations tout en finesse recèlent de détails permettant une meilleure compréhension de son travail et de clins d’œil à la culture urbaine qui l’a vu grandir. Ses œuvres murales, pleines d’une poésie urbaine unique en son genre, s’entrelacent avec les lieux qui les accueillent. Qu’elles soient à taille humaine ou monumentales, ses fresques capturent le regard et nous transportent, le temps d’un instant, dans un monde où Nature et mécanique s’entremêlent et coexistent paisiblement.

Comme pour chacune de ses créations, il tenais à faire du lien entre l’œuvre et son environnement. A cet égard, il a visité à son arrivé le musée archéologique de Saint-Raphaël et la vue panoramique de la Tour de l’église Saint-Pierre qui lui ont permis d’introduire des évocations du patrimoine, de la culture et de l’histoire locale, que chacun pourra découvrir et décoder en regardant la fresque : Le viaduc d’Anthéor; L’épave de l’avion d’Antoine de Saint-Exupéry; Les joutes provençales; Les villas Belle Epoque; L’église Sant Rafeù; La rue République pavée... et il est même possible de deviner sur le tatouage du personnage la mention « E2C », qui signifie « Ecole de la 2èmechance », structure qui assure un parcours de formation et d'accompagnement individualisé pour les jeunes sans qualification. Cette mention fait référence à sa rencontre avec ces jeunes lors de ma venue sur la 5ème édition du festival « Résonances urbaines ». Leur exposition autour du graffiti, du pochoir et du lettrage à la salle Flochlay m’a beaucoup touché par son contenu et par sa sincérité. Les moments d’échanges avec eux restent pour moi de courts mais précieux souvenirs.

Anecdote de l’artiste lors de la réalisation de l’œuvre :

Le mur étant positionné juste à l’entrée de la Maison des associations, j'ai rapidement sympathisé avec le gardien Jean-Michel ALMELA, qui a su me faire découvrir des pans importants de la culture locale, et avec qui nous avons partagé d’agréables moments. La tradition des joutes provençales apparait ainsi sur le médaillon du personnage représenté, symbolisée par un plastron, qui n’est autre que la reproduction du médaillon de chaîne de Jean-Michel ! Voilà pourquoi j’ai souhaité baptiser la fresque « Jùan Miguel de la Méditerranée ».

MAYE has been working on canvas for about ten years, he never abandoned the walls of his adolescence, on which he discovered graffiti in the mid-2000s.

His characteristic style, with slender and biscornus characters, is unmistakable: there floats a surrealist atmosphere which carries us in its poetic and dreamy universe. Artist of the South – born in Sète, living in Montpellier – yet his works have invaded the streets of all of France, from the Mediterranean to Brittany, passing through the capital.

Whether he plays with colors or black and white, his creations all in finesse contain details allowing a better understanding of his work and winks to the urban culture that saw him grow up. His mural works, full of a unique urban poetry, intertwine with the places that welcome them. Whether on a human scale or monumental, his frescoes capture the gaze and transport us, for a moment, in a world where nature and mechanics intertwine and peacefully coexist.

As with each of his creations, he wanted to make the connection between the work and its environment. In this regard, he visited upon his arrival the Archaeological Museum of Saint-Raphaël and the panoramic view of the Tower of the Church of Saint-Pierre which allowed him to introduce evocations of heritage, culture and local history, that everyone will be able to discover and decode by watching the fresco : The viaduct of Anthéor; The wreck of the plane of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry; The Provençal jousts; The Belle Epoque villas; The church of Sant Rafeù; La rue République pavée... and it is even possible to guess on the character’s tattoo the mention "E2C", which means "School of the 2nd chance", a structure that provides an individualized training and support program for young people without qualifications. This mention refers to her meeting with these young people during my visit to the 5th edition of the "Urban Resonances" festival. Their exhibition around graffiti, stencil and lettering at the Flochlay room touched me a lot by its content and sincerity. The moments of exchanges with them remain for me short but precious memories.

Anecdote of the artist during the creation of the work:

The wall being positioned just at the entrance of the House of associations, I quickly sympathized with the keeper Jean-Michel ALMELA, who was able to make me discover important parts of the local culture, and with whom we shared pleasant moments. The tradition of Provençal jousts thus appears on the medallion of the character represented, symbolized by a breastplate, which is none other than the reproduction of the chain medallion of Jean-Michel! That is why I wanted to name the fresco "Jùan Miguel de la Méditerranée".
