The work is by French artist Codex Urbanus. He is known for inventing fantastical hybrid creatures assembled from characteristics of real animal species, often giving them names that resemble scientific classifications. The World Heritage Site Völklinger Hütte describes his practice as a form of releasing imaginary species into public space.
This approach is particularly suited to the pedestrian underpass connecting the railway station with the former industrial complex. Rather than encountering the creatures in a gallery, passers-by discover them along an everyday route between the town and its industrial heritage site.
The Völklinger Hütte documents works by Codex Urbanus from 2022 and lists him in connection with that year's Urban Art Biennale.
