Menander

This mural is inspired by the quote of Menander: "Character is the destiny of man." The artwork explores the idea that our choices, values, and character shape the course of our lives.

At the center stands a figure surrounded by theatrical masks, symbols of the many roles people play throughout life. Sometimes we reveal our true selves; at other times we hide behind a mask. The composition reflects the tension between identity and appearance, authenticity and performance.

The masks themselves have their roots in ancient theater. The smiling mask represents comedy, while the sorrowful mask represents tragedy-together symbolizing the full spectrum of human experience.

About Menander Menander (c. 342-291 BC) was an ancient Greek playwright and one of the leading figures of New Comedy. His works focused on everyday life, human relationships, and the complexities of character-making his insights into human nature as relevant today as they were over two thousand years ago.

This artwork is part of the Quotes Route in Rotterdam Lombardijen, a public art project that brings inspiring words from poets, thinkers and writers to the heart of the neighborhood.
