Milan is Italy’s city of labour and the birthplace of the workers' movement.
In 1891, the first Camera del Lavoro (Chamber of Labour) in Italy was established here, created to combat exploitation and unemployment. Later, in 1906, Milan also saw the founding of the Confederazione Generale del Lavoro (General Confederation of Labor), the country’s first trade union.
The Mural of Labour pays tribute to Milan's industrious spirit and strong sense of solidarity. It illustrates the struggles of Milanese workers to improve living and working conditions and their fight for a more just and democratic society.
Among those depicted is Teresa Noce, who symbolically represents the journey of the workers’ movement. A partisan, a member of Italy’s Constituent Assembly, and a trade union leader (serving as General Secretary of the textile workers’ union), she also served in Parliament and was the architect of Italy’s first maternity law.
