Things I Did This Year

The mural ‘Things I Did This Year’ is Marija Tiurina’s comic-style to-do list on the corner of Gunthorpe Street and 78 Wenthworth Street.

The artwork was created in October 2020 for the London Mural Festival. It is a direct relic of the eventful year 2020, a visual diary of the lockdown. It is a playful and somewhat absurdist overview of the familiar (and bizarre) ways in which people had to spend their days indoors at the time. The wall features dozens of small illustrations. You can see the same little figure reading for hours on end, tending to plants, looking at themselves through a magnifying glass, camping in a living-room tent, simply lying on the floor feeling overwhelmed, or literally killing time. Political and social trends from 2020, such as the Black Lives Matter protests (the girl at the bottom left wearing the BLM T-shirt) and video calls, are also incorporated into the painting.

Marija Tiurina is a versatile illustrator and artist, originally from Lithuania. She studied Multimedia Design in London and now lives and works in the Netherlands.
