This mural by artist Sidney Waerts has brought the water tower back to Zuiderplein in Leeuwarden.
Leeuwarden’s oldest water tower was built in 1888 and stood between the Schrans and Zuiderplein, on the north side of the railway line to Groningen. Unfortunately, this striking tower was demolished during the construction of the Oostergoweg.
The beautiful mural on the façade was commissioned at the request of the complex’s residents’ committee. The façade is tall and rounded, making it ideal for a work of art. And they didn’t have to think long about the subject. It had to be the water tower that was demolished in 1972.
Lighting has also recently been installed. Now the mural can also be admired in the evenings.

Deze muurschildering van kunstenaar Sidney Waerts bracht de watertoren terug aan het Zuiderplein in Leeuwarden.
De oudste watertoren van Leeuwarden werd gebouwd in 1888 en stond tussen de Schrans en het Zuiderplein, aan de noordkant van het spoor naar Groningen. Bij de aanleg van de Oostergoweg is deze markante toren helaas gesloopt.
De fraaie schildering op de gevel kwam er op verzoek van de bewonerscommissie van het complex. De gevel is hoog en rond en zeer geschikt voor een kunstwerk. En over het onderwerp hoefden ze niet lang na te denken. Het moest de watertoren worden die in 1972 gesloopt is.
Onlangs is ook verlichting aangebracht. Nu is de schildering ook 's avonds te bewonderen.
