Animalinas #48: Hazelworm

Deze mural maakt deel uit van Animalinas, een kunstproject dat de verborgen dierenwereld langs de Oude Spoorwegberm zichtbaar maakt. Voor dit werk koos de kunstenaar de hazelworm (Anguis fragilis), een van de meest miskende bewoners van het gebied. Vaak aangezien voor een slang en onterecht gevreesd, is de hazelworm in werkelijkheid een pootloze hagedis die een belangrijke rol speelt in het ecosysteem door zich te voeden met naaktslakken, regenwormen en andere kleine ongewervelden.

De keuze voor deze locatie is geen toeval. Langs de Oude Spoorwegberm in Waarloos en Kontich leeft de hazelworm nog steeds in zijn natuurlijke habitat, verscholen tussen gras, bladeren en dood hout. Wie geduldig genoeg is, kan hem er soms nog spotten terwijl hij zich op een zonnige plek opwarmt.

Met deze mural krijgt een dier dat normaal onopgemerkt blijft eindelijk de aandacht die het verdient. De kunstenaar omschrijft het als "de hazelworm die eindelijk zijn muur heeft gevonden": een symbool voor de kleine soorten waar de meeste mensen achteloos aan voorbijlopen, maar die onmisbaar zijn voor een gezond landschap.

Deze mural is de 48ste creatie binnen het groeiende Animalinas-project en markeert bovendien de eerste keer dat het initiatief de rivier de Nete oversteekt. Zo verbindt Animalinas kunst, natuur en educatie, en nodigt het voorbijgangers uit om de verborgen biodiversiteit van hun eigen omgeving met nieuwe ogen te ontdekken.

This mural is part of Animalinas, an art project that reveals the hidden animal world along the Old Railway Embankment. For this work, the artist chose the slow worm (Anguis fragilis), one of the area's most overlooked inhabitants. Often mistaken for a snake and unjustly feared, the slow worm is actually a legless lizard that plays an important role in the ecosystem by feeding on slugs, earthworms, and other small invertebrates.

The choice of this location is no coincidence. Along the Old Railway Embankment in Waarloos and Kontich, the slow worm still lives in its natural habitat, hidden among grass, leaves, and dead wood. Those patient enough can sometimes still spot it there warming itself in a sunny spot.

With this mural, an animal that normally remains unnoticed finally receives the attention it deserves. The artist describes it as "the slow worm that has finally found its wall": a symbol for the small species that most people walk past without noticing, but which are indispensable for a healthy landscape.

This mural is the 48th creation within the growing Animalinas project and also marks the first time the initiative crosses the river Nete. In this way, Animalinas connects art, nature, and education, and invites passers-by to discover the hidden biodiversity of their own surroundings with fresh eyes.
