't Hof van Commerce

Op de muren van het recreatieterrein in Izegem brengt de lokale kunstenares Djoels een eerbetoon aan twee iconen uit haar geboortestad: Flip Kowlier en Serge Buyse, leden van de legendarische hiphopgroep 't Hof van Commerce. Met twee grote graffitiportretten viert ze de artiesten wiens muziek al decennialang de culturele identiteit van Izegem heeft gevormd.

Voor Djoels is de muurschildering zeer persoonlijk. Ze groeide op in Izegem en bracht talloze uren door met luisteren naar 't Hof van Commerce terwijl ze op deze plek skate. Tegenwoordig is het terrein een legale graffiti-ruimte, de perfecte setting om haar passie voor straatkunst te combineren met haar bewondering voor de muzikanten die de soundtrack van haar jeugd vormden.

De portretten tonen meer dan alleen bekende gezichten – ze belichamen een gedeeld gevoel van lokale trots en nostalgie. De werken, uitgevoerd met technische precisie en expressieve details, eren de blijvende invloed van een groep die het West-Vlaamse dialect en de regionale identiteit stevig op de Belgische muziekkaart heeft gezet.

Het was een toepasselijk toeval dat 't Hof van Commerce slechts een paar honderd meter verderop optrad terwijl Djoels de muurschilderingen afmaakte. De muzikanten hadden al toestemming gegeven voor de portretten en volgden de voortgang van het project via sociale media voordat ze de locatie persoonlijk bezochten. Hun enthousiaste reactie – en een uitnodiging voor Djoels om als gast het concert bij te wonen – maakte van een al betekenisvol project een onvergetelijke viering van de muziek, kunst en gemeenschap van Izegem.

For Djoels, the mural is deeply personal. Having grown up in Izegem, she spent countless hours listening to 't Hof van Commerce while skating at this very location. Today, the site has become a legal graffiti space, making it the perfect setting to merge her passion for street art with her admiration for the musicians who formed the soundtrack of her youth.

The portraits capture more than just familiar faces—they embody a shared sense of local pride and nostalgia. Rendered with technical precision and expressive detail, the works honour the enduring influence of a group that helped put the West Flemish dialect and regional identity firmly on Belgium's musical map.

In a fitting coincidence, 't Hof van Commerce performed just a few hundred metres away while Djoels was completing the murals. Having already granted permission for the portraits, the musicians followed the project's progress on social media before visiting the site in person. Their enthusiastic response—and an invitation for Djoels to attend the concert as their guest—turned an already meaningful project into an unforgettable celebration of Izegem's music, art and community.
