Hamm Central Station

The history of Hamm (Westfalen) Hauptbahnhof dates back to 1847, transforming the city into one of Germany’s most vital rail junctions and industrial hubs. [1, 3, 4]

Over nearly 180 years, the station evolved from a simple stop on the Cologne-Minden line into Europe’s largest marshalling yard by the mid-20th century. Because of its massive marshalling yard and its strategic role as a logistical bottleneck, the station was a primary target for Allied air raids and was heavily destroyed in World War II. The German Federal Railway rebuilt the station facade in its 1920 likeness after the war. Extensive restoration in the late 1990s carefully returned the historic ticket hall to its original architectural splendor.
