Het werk zet de verbinding tussen het stadscentrum en nabijgelegen Molenvijvers in de verf. Tegelijkertijd wilt de stad Genk met deze mural de link tussen de ambachtelijke en artistieke Molenstraat en de twee shoppingcentra in de verf zetten.

Smates verwerkte in zijn muurschildering niet alleen de natuurlijke omgeving, maar ook een stukje lokale geschiedenis. In het verleden waren de Molenvijvers immers een ontmoetingsplek waar vele generaties Genkenaren kwamen zwemmen en ontspannen.

Het werk heeft voorlopig nog geen naam. De stad Genk lanceert binnenkort via haar sociale media een wedstrijd waarbij inwoners een passende titel voor het kunstwerk kunnen voorstellen.

Bart Smeets, die werkt onder de artiestennaam Smates, specialiseerde zich in fotorealistische graffiti. Zijn werken zijn extreem gedetailleerd en bevatten veel reliëf. In de multiculturele Stalenstraat kan je nog twee andere werken van Smates gaan bewonderen. Deze kan je hier en hier bekijken.

Mural in progress by Smates.

The work highlights the connection between the city centre and the nearby Molenvijvers. At the same time, the city of Genk aims to use this mural to emphasise the link between the traditional and artistic Molenstraat and the two shopping centres.

In his mural, Smates has incorporated not only the natural surroundings but also a piece of local history. After all, in the past, the Molenvijvers were a meeting place where many generations of Genk residents came to swim and relax.

The work does not yet have a name. The city of Genk will soon launch a competition via its social media channels, inviting residents to suggest a suitable title for the artwork.
