The Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex in Essen is a globally renowned UNESCO World Heritage site. Inscribed in 2001, this 100-hectare architectural masterwork represents the rise and fall of the European coal and steel industries. The iconic twin-trestle winding framework above Shaft XII is the most famous landmark of the region. Today, the industrial complex has transitioned into a major center for art, design, and regional history.
