The mural “Mulheres do Mar” (Women of the Sea), by Alexandre Farto (Vhils), was created as part of the Esposende SmartCity initiative. This work by Vhils' consists of several women's faces on cement and pays tribute to fishermen through the women who stayed on land.
This element of urban art aims to “pay homage to the people of the sea, bringing together the past and the present, since the avant-garde work is installed next to the shipyards that make the history of Esposende.
The information about the work says: “The tribute of the Municipality of Esposende to the people of the sea is perpetuated near the river and the sea, elements that gravitate in the identity and memory of the place, through the talent of one of the most renowned Portuguese artists of today. Vhils' works are spread across the four corners of the world and his unmistakable technique extracts the excess from the constructed material, transforming it into much more than faces in context. They are images with soul, which immortalise the essence of History, as portrayed by its most notable figures: artists, poets and, above all, ordinary citizens who are different from all the simple everyday people. In this case, in the anonymity of a woman's face, we praise someone who was an anchor on land, someone who also made the land a place of diaspora, travel and adventure; who gave his body to the sea and who gathered sustenance from the sea and proliferated it.”
