Textile City (EN)

In the mid-1970s, Willem Wilmink wrote this poem about “his” city in decline. Little remained of the once-vibrant Enschede after the collapse of the textile industry. Through Bannink’s musical setting, the poem became a melancholic blues, in which he incorporated “De Driekusman,” a traditional polka from the Twente region. The lyrics are now outdated. The Boulevard has long since ceased to run through the heart of Enschede, and the post office and V&D have disappeared. The city is now a Euregional hub for art, culture, and conviviality.

Halverwege de jaren zeventig schreef Willem Wilmink dit gedicht over ‘zijn’ stad in verval. Van het eens zo bruisende Enschede was na het instorten van de textielindustrie weinig over. Door de toonzetting van Bannink werd het gedicht een treurige blues, waarin hij De Driekusman verwerkte, een Twentse boerenpolka. De tekst is inmiddels achterhaald. De Boulevard doorkruist het hart van Enschede al lang niet meer en postkantoor en V&D zijn verdwenen. De stad is nu een Euregionaal trefpunt voor kunst, cultuur en gezelligheid.
