“Fireflies” or “Vuurvliegjes” refers to Biolight, a technological innovation from Philips in which bacteria are used as energy-less lighting. The inspiration came from studying luminous organisms such as fireflies, glowworms, jellyfish ... (biomimicry) The phenomenon Bioluminescence is created by a chemical reaction in which an enzyme (luciferase) reacts with a light-emitting molecule (luciferin).
Biolight is part of a wider project Microbial Home by Philips Design that uses an 'integrated cyclical ecosystem' to recycle traditional household waste through to recycle bacteria. These bio innovations are redefining energy consumption in your own home, but can also be used as lighting in public spaces. As you can see in the artwork, these 'glowing plants' illuminate roadside tunnels and covered passages, serve as warning strips on stairs, or provide atmospheric lighting in parks and squares.

De inspiratie kwam door het bestuderen van lichtgevende organismes zoals vuurvliegjes, gloeiwormpjes, kwallen ......(biomimicry) Het fenomeen bioluminescentie ontstaat door een chemische reactie waarbij een enzym (luciferase) reageert met een lichtgevende molecule (luciferine).
Biolight maakt deel uit van een breder project Microbial Home door Philips Design waarin een 'geïntegreerd cyclisch ecosysteem wordt gebruikt om traditioneel huisafval d.m.v. bacteriën te recycleren. Deze bio innovaties herdefiniëren energieconsumptie in eigen woonst, maar kunnen ook toegepast worden als verlichting in publieke ruimtes. Zoals je kan zien in het kunstwerk verlichten deze ‘gloeiende planten' wegbermen tunnels en overdekte passages, dienen als waarschuwingsstrips op trappen, of zorgen voor sfeerlicht in parken en op pleinen.
