The artwork turns the wall into a kind of three-dimensional façade, complete with a series of windows. Using vanishing-point perspective, the windows are arranged in a way that makes the flat wall appear to form both an outward and an inward corner.
Each window tells its own little story. Some feature references to Düren’s Turkish twin town, Karadeniz Ereğli – for example, minarets or curtains inspired by traditional mashrabiya screens. The bright, vibrant colours of the window blinds bring a sense of sunshine and cheerfulness to the mural. Reflections of the blue sky add to the Mediterranean feel of the Turkish port city.
Other windows contain elements from Nord-Düren, such as local window designs or the reflected spire of St. Joachim Church. The windows vary in size, appearing slightly smaller or larger than they would in real life. This creates a surreal, almost dreamlike space and makes the otherwise flat gable wall appear three-dimensional.
At the very top of the gable, you can spot an airplane window. It hints at the distance between Düren and Karadeniz Ereğli – but also at the possibility of overcoming that distance and bringing the two cities closer together.
At ground-floor level, the artwork also features a kiosk shown at roughly a 1:1 scale. Kiosks like this are a familiar sight in Turkish cities such as Karadeniz Ereğli. The stylised kiosk displays the coat of arms of Düren’s twin town. Thanks to the use of perspective, it appears almost three-dimensional and becomes a fictional meeting point – symbolising the role of the surrounding urban space as a neighbourhood square and place for people to come together.
The artwork was selected as the winner of a competition held in spring 2024. As part of the regeneration of Nord-Düren, the City of Düren wanted to give the square named after its Turkish twin town, Karadeniz Ereğli, a new and distinctive look.
Artist Tim Trantenroth won the jury competition against 26 other artists. In summer 2024, he was commissioned by the City of Düren to transform the approximately 200 m² gable wall at the corner of Josef-Schregel-Straße and Josefstraße into the large-scale artwork.
