Tomás MacCurtain and family

This mural commemorates Tomás MacCurtain, a key figure in Cork’s revolutionary history and cultural life. Created with Transition Year students from St. Angela’s and Christian Brothers College, it portrays MacCurtain as a musician and Celtic revivalist, surrounded by his wife Elisabeth and three of their five children.

The lark represents his favourite traditional song, The Lark in the Clear Air, which he played while recruiting for the Irish Volunteers across Munster. The mural also references the pipe band he established in Cork, while the soaring lark symbolises his fight for the freedom of Cork and Ireland.
