Air Raid Shelter

Although this artwork has suffered the degradation you can expect in a tropical climate, it retains vestiges of the vibrant colours that would have existed when it was first completed. The work is a depiction of the resilience of the local communities in the face of the threat felt from Japanese aggression in WW2. Daily life and industry persisted and the canvas (an old air raid shelter) is symbolic. Even though Australia was not directly invaded by the Japanese there were air raids across the north.
