The building served its original purpose as a public restroom until 1993. 1996, it was listed as a historic landmark and underwent extensive renovation. After standing vacant for a long time, the city-owned property was leased to the Portikus Förderverein e.V., which uses it as an exhibition space for contemporary art. The interior serves as a small “neon hall,” and outdoor exhibitions open to the public are regularly held on the exterior facades.
