Apostu

For the artist, stickers are among the primary ways in which we interact as humans, whether we’ve known each other since forever or if we just met. A sticker is a piece of paper, a drawing that acts upon the reality of the space onto which it is stuck and changes it, just like the interaction between two people changes each other’s reality and perspective. We are all but stickers in the lives of those we encounter along our journey.

The mural painting can be interpreted as a gigantic sticker (his artistic signature) covering the walls of the high school he learned in and where he used to teach. The sticker also contains the name of the great sculptor Apostu (after whom the high school was named) in a somehow encoded way, as well as two of his main sculptures, translated into Mazerschi’s visual language. The chosen sculptures (mother & daughter / father & son) are drawn upon a background containing a repetitive pattern: 2020, which can be interpreted as a sequence in binary code that represents the events we’ve lived so far during this troubled year.

This choice of sculptures to reproduce is the artist’s answer to this year’s challenges: family and art are two of the main elements that can bring peace and comfort to the individual and the society at large when life throws at us unwanted, uncontrollable events. Art and love are the beautiful motives that can cover the ugly face of this difficult year.

The artwork covers 150 square meters and has been created during the 3rd edition of the ZidArt Festival - DomiNow -, using mostly air-purifying paint and spray paint.
