Quem cuida de você? [Who takes care of you?]

A painting that proposes that we take care of each other, that regardless of our personal decisions we can look to the side and understand that there are realities and choices that are different from ours and that still deserve to be protected. And protected by law.Rue is a very important symbol in Brazil, in addition to its powers of protection and spiritual cleansing, it is an herb used for menstrual care and applications related to abortions for many generations. Here, it is placed on the lap of a woman, wrapped in a newspaper with the headline "Green Tide: the time of our lives is now."We need to take care of women and people who are pregnant, we need to make sure that their wishes are preserved. We need to ensure that motherhood is not compulsory. We also need to ensure that motherhood is experienced to the fullest, desired, healthy, with dignity, and with respectful care.

To talk about this mini mural, I quote an excerpt from the article 'UN demands Brazil to legalize abortion after 12,000 girls become mothers in 2023', published by Portal Geledés on 05/23/2024:"More than 12.500 girls between the ages of 8 and 14 became mothers in 2023 in Brazil, reflecting the scale of violence against girls in the country. (...) In a document delivered to the UN committee, organizations highlighted, based on DataSUS data, that in the last ten years, 204,400 children and adolescents became mothers — 74.2% of them were black."

Latinas Fervilhando [Latinas on fire]

I was born and raised in Aricanduva, in the East Zone of São Paulo. On the corner of my street was the headquarters of a small football team, wich has always been a community place for us. Everything happened there: there was a bar where men gathered, amateur football players, capoeira classes, and there were always birthdays on the weekends. This mural is based on a photo taken on my 3rd birthday, celebrated there. One of the women - the one with the watch - is Grandma Cleide, who was responsible for all our birthday cakes when we were kids and is known for her silver ball decorations and clown-shaped cakes. When I thought of a mural for the Jardim Ipanema Association, I wanted to portray this scenario, of a place that serves many purposes for the community. That welcomes, that fights, but that also celebrates. I wanted to unite these two places that are part of my history and that also tell the story of the outskirts of the East Zone, which, even in the face of so much neglect, insists on finding ways to teach the value of the collective.

As memórias conversam [Memories talk to each other]

Painting of a photograph I took in 2020 during 8M in Santiago de Chile. This little girl was in Plaza Baquedano, the meeting point of our march, and was divided between clapping for the sea of ​​women gathered and holding her little sister's hand. It's beautiful to see children being part of political decisions that affect them directly, not just in the future.

When I thought about the image I would like to paint in a place as renowned for brazilian street art as Beco do Batman, I remembered a day I walked with my family after accompanying them to visit my solo exhibition that was taking place at A7MA. I remember that my cousins, super excited about the place, asked if I had any of my paintings there and I answered with an ironic laugh that no, because at that moment I was convinced that a female muralist having a space in Beco do Batman was practically an impossible task. Although today this mural is a reality, this impression unfortunately is still true, just count the number of women on the walls.With this thought in mind, I decided to paint a portrait of my mother, in the kitchen of the house that was once ours. I wanted to bring a bit of familiarity, for myself and for many others. I wanted to challenge people's interpretation of what a woman wearing a balaclava and apron would mean.During the painting process, people approached me to ask who it was and I proudly said that it was my mother Maria da Graça, who no longer inhabited this dimension, and that this was a tribute. Towards the end of the painting, a woman approached me and said that she was very happy with the mural, that she had worked as a waitress in restaurants for a long time and saw a reflection of herself there: invisible behind an apron, trapped in a serving role.

Mural made by Priscila Barbosa in July 2024, during the 6th edition of "Delas Fest", the first feminist and contextual urban art festival in Europe, organized by <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.instagram.com/7hcoop/">7H Cooperativa Cultural</a>It's a tribute to daily things, warm homes, friendly relationships and common help that women do every day, the essential caring for each other that happens in every conversation, every meal, behind every smile. A remembering that affections and self-care are what make us keep going on.This mural wouldn't have been possible without the neighbourhood help, who brought photos and told their histories and memories to Priscila, helping her inspiration to make this beautiful design, so people who live around can feel it a little as their own.

In 'Levante-se', I propose a reflection on the relationship between the women around us in the construction of feminism and revolutionary stance. I choose to illustrate women who are part of my life and who contribute to my way of seeing and facing the world, always understanding this process as something collective and built by many hands, and whose results will often only be enjoyed by future generations.

The title of the work comes from a xenophobic clash during the painting process and aims to act as a reminder that no border, whether physical or not, should stop women from achieving dreams around the world.“Ona nije Latinskoj Americi”, meaning 'She's not in Latin America' portrays the possibility of union between distinct cultures through the interweaving of symbolic fabrics for both regions. On the one hand, the “green panuẽlo” characteristic of feminist struggles in Latin America. On the other, the red checkerboard that makes up the domestic scene in Bosnia-Herzegovina.&nbsp;According to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://aborda.com.br/artistas/pri-barbosa/">Priscila Barbosa</a> , “finding similarities between Slavs and Latins was not a difficult task (…)” and that “in a few conversations it was possible to perceive the processes of marginalization and the arduous attempts to build a society that embraces differences (…)” .&nbsp;Bosnia-Herzegovina is one of the six republics of the former Yugoslavia and, after 30 years of the war that began its independence process, it still experiences solid political conflicts due, especially, to ethnic rivalries.&nbsp;

Sinchy Warmi: 'until all can be born with dignity', a mural created in Ecuador for the Nuevo Mural festival.A few weeks before my trip, I was moved by a video showing a midwife teaching her son how to feel the baby in the womb of a pregnant woman. A week later, the Festival director Jairo wrote to me proposing that I change the location of my painting to Cotacachi. The new location was the setting for the video filmed by Wombs of the world, and the house belonged to the mother of the midwife filmed, Martha, who taught her the craft.I don't believe in coincidences, I believe that the universe seeks ways to connect people and this was one of the most beautiful I've ever experienced.In Kichua Sinchy Warmi means wise woman. And a wise woman is one who dedicates herself to listening and learning from others. I learned so much on this trip that it's hard to put it into words, so I hope it becomes visible through the painting itself.

'A criação' was done at EMEF Professor Antônio Prudente, in Brasilandia, São Paulo.The process of painting children while surrounded by them was a learning experience in itself. The biggest lesson was that they always surprise us and that this unpredictability needs to become a friend that teaches us that not everything needs to be obvious or too rigid. Duda, Gabi and José showed me this in practice and I hope I don't forget it.
