<div>From practice march to world run The history of the Nijmegen Four Days Marches begins in 1909. The (mainly military) participants in the four-day distance marches (with various starting points in the Netherlands) organized by the Royal Dutch Association for Physical Education (KNBLO) spent the night in the Prins Hendrik barracks in Nijmegen. Instead of the usual brown beans with bacon, they got a three-course menu, which consisted of soup, an AVG and a dessert. This hospitality was rewarded and the walkers returned to Nijmegen again and again in the following years. In 1925, the city definitively became the starting point of the Four Days Marches. The number of participants increases over the years: in 1925, 766 people sign up for the walking tour; in 2019 there are 44,702. The group of walkers is also becoming more diverse, although it is not until 1919 that the first woman successfully completes the Four Days Marches. After this, women are no longer a rare sight; female walking clubs (such as the Blauwvosjes) simply cover the distance in their heel shoes. Due to the arrival of the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928, international walkers are also participating for the first time that year. At that time only a handful of countries were represented, nowadays there are about seventy per edition. The Waalpainting unites the past and present of this unique walking event. The boxes symbolize the early years of the Four Days Marches; the globe refers to the international character that the Four Days Marches now have. The flag of the Four Days Marches waves in the background. This green flag with an orange cross was adopted in 1909 from the KNBLO. Of course there is also a prominent role for the gladiolus. Hikers receive this flower when they have survived the trip; just as gladiators in Roman times were buried under gladiolus when they defeated their opponent. Finally, there are also twelve titles of music songs about walking to be found in the globe. Can you find them all?</div>

Who is Emilia van Oranje Nassau?In the 17th century, Emilia, the daughter of Prince William of Orange, acquired Wijchen Castle. Driven by her love for Emanuel, a man without prospects and of Catholic descent, she had the castle extensively renovated. The money for this renovation came partly from the sale of her precious pearl necklace. However, their love story was anything but easy; due to Emanuel's religion and social status, they were not allowed to marry.Despite these obstacles, Emilia and Emanuel settled together in Wijchen. To emphasize their deep connection, they had numerous decorations placed on the castle that referred to their love. A striking example of this are the wall anchors in the closed 'S-shape', which stand for 'fermesse', an old French word that means 'faithful'.These symbols of loyalty and love tell the story of Emilia and Emanuel, a story that still lives on in the walls of Wijchen Castle, as a timeless tribute to their unwavering love.

A special street art work was created at the lock in Heumen by the artist duo Moris (Maurice Broekhoff) and Dosa (Sander Dolstra). The work of art is a tribute to the historical events that took place here during the Second World War. The mural features an image of the old bascule bridge that once stood next to the lock. The image is designed as if it were printed on photo paper and attached to the wall with drawing pins. This choice of style gives the impression of a temporary memory, as if the past is briefly presenting itself, fleeting but important. It is a reminder of how the bridge was once part of the landscape, but has since disappeared. The lock at Heumen played an important role during the Second World War. In 1940, it was captured by the German army as part of the invasion of the Netherlands. Four years later, in September 1944, the lock became the scene of fighting between German troops and American paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division during Operation Market Garden. Eventually, the Allies managed to capture the lock, securing a strategically important passage. A striking detail in the mural is the depiction of bullet holes. These refer to the real bullet holes that were once visible in the walls of the lock building. Over the years, these were accidentally bricked up during renovations. The artists have chosen to symbolically bring back these 'scars' in their work. In this way, they recreated the traces of the violence of war.Moris and Dosa frequently paint under their collective name Doolhof==========Bij de sluis in Heumen is een bijzonder straatkunstwerk gemaakt door het kunstenaarsduo Moris (Maurice Broekhoff) en Dosa (Sander Dolstra). Het herinnert ons eraan dat de brug ooit deel uitmaakte van het landschap, maar inmiddels verdwenen is.De sluis bij Heumen speelde een belangrijke rol tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. In 1940 werd deze door het Duitse leger veroverd als onderdeel van de invasie van Nederland. Vier jaar later, in september 1944, werd de sluis het toneel van gevechten tussen Duitse troepen en Amerikaanse parachutisten van de 82nd Airborne Division tijdens Operatie Market Garden. De kunstenaars hebben ervoor gekozen om deze ‘littekens’ symbolisch terug te brengen in hun werk. Mural commissioned by Talis Input was provided by the residents of the Meijhorst district. Of course, a football could not be missing and it had to be a colorful whole. Hence this design.

Don Emanuel had a relationship with Emilia of Nassau (daughter of William of Orange) about 500 years ago. At the time, they lived in Wijchen Castle, which they had completely renovated. An image of Emilia can be seen at the other Jumbo branch in Wijchen Zuid. Both paintings are printed as images on the Jumbo shopper that is for sale there.
