<p>L’univers de Janis De Man est riche en surprises. Si beaucoup d’artistes s’identifient par leur style, le graffeur Hollandais aime surprendre et varier les inspirations et les techniques. Trompes l’œil, portraits, paysages, « graffs »… Janis De Man propose une œuvre multiple autour d’un talent unique qui s’exprime sur les murs d’Europe depuis 1997. Une de ses dernières créations en date, une immense bibliothèque regroupant les livres préférés des habitants à Utrecht (Pays-Bas) et réalisée avec Deef Feed, a beaucoup fait parler d’elle. Capable de créer sur les murs de la rue mais aussi à l’intérieur des habitations, Janis De Man aime faire participer les habitants pour créer une œuvre originale que chacun peut s’approprier. <br>___________________________________________________________<br>The universe of Janis De Man is rich in surprises. <div>Utrecht based graffiti artist Jan Heinsbroek (aka JanIsDeMan) realizes lively 3D paintings for local communities who want to connect. He aims to create projects ‘where everyone can identify themselves’ by asking for the involvement of the residents’ who commission him. Jan Is De Man’s most recent gift to a neighbourhood is this whimsical tri-level trompe l’oeil wall mural bookcase on a house in Tilburg.<br>Part of the 3D street art concept is to involve the residents in the artistic process, “We enter the community by asking people for their favorite books. Everybody, every age, every culture, every language is welcome. The only rule I set up to participate in this art project is: no political books and no religious books. Besides that, every book title is welcome.” This way Jan manages to capture the spirit of the residents with an array of their favorite books.<br>Since his bookcase murals have been unveiled they have become not only an artistic source to bring the neighbours together but also a wall for people to visit for literary selfies. “The neighborhood where the works are made are often filled with different cultures. And I’ve noticed that this project brings people together without pushing it. They meet each other through books. Regardless of the differences in cultures, regardless of the differences in political point of views. <p>Jan is de Man s’est spécialisé dans la représentation de bibliothèques monumentales qu’il peint en trompe-l’oeil sur les façades de grandes villes. L’emplacement choisi pour cette fresque est symbolique, car elle occupe un pignon à proximité de la Place de Nimy sur l’axe d’une des principales entrées de Mons. La Bibliothèque de Nimy, ainsi dénommée, est impressionnante autant par le style et l’ampleur de la fresque qui prend possession de la totalité de la surface du mur, que par les richesses qu’elle dévoile. En effet, l’intérêt ici ne réside peut-être pas tant dans la prouesse technique que dans l’iconographie que l’artiste prend le soin de détailler à chaque étage de la fresque. Rien n’est dû au hasard ! La bibliothèque est l’espace le plus intime et le plus précieux que nous puissions avoir chez soi ; elle renferme des trésors cachés, bien souvent oubliés, enfouis dans nos mémoires. Elle conserve aussi une connaissance accumulée ainsi que des histoires lues et transmises de père en fils… Par contre, les bibliothèques publiques, tout comme les musées, conservent en leur sain une histoire commune. Cette mémoire collective de Nimy est le sujet premier de cette fresque. Ce trompe-l’oeil à l’échelle urbaine, côté rue, remet au goût du jour une histoire aussi intime que oubliée ; elle appartient aux familles de cette bourgade au pied de Mons. L’histoire de Nimy est ingrate à plus d’un titre, car souvent trop assimilée à celle de Mons. Pour cause leurs histoires se croisent et s’entremêlent souvent : celle des remparts, du chapitre de Sainte-Waudru, du passage de la Haine, de l’industrialisation ou encore celles des grandes batailles. Le village de Nimy est situé sur la route de Bruxelles à quelques centaines de mètres de l’une des grandes entrées dans la Cité du Doudou. La proximité de Nimy et de Mons est telle que le bâti immobilier est continu entre les deux communes. Cette situation géographique fera que Nimy deviendra un axe autoroutier très important, qui coupera le village en deux. Pourtant, cette petite bourgade a eu ses heures de gloire. Ce village, aujourd’hui essentiellement résidentiel, était un haut lieu de la vie industrielle régionale : fabriques de fer, aciéries, faïenceries et... fabriques de pipes en terre, véritable spécialité locale qui porta loin les noms de Nihoul et Scouflaire, héros de l’artisanat nimysien. Tout commence avec la création d’une usine de faïencerie qui s’installe à Nimy vers 1789, à proximité de la Haine et des ses moulins. Nos régions sont alors sous la domination des Pays-Bas autrichiens. Durant cette période, la faïencerie de Nimy obtient même de Joseph II le titre prestigieux de « Fabrique Impériale et Royale». En 1810, la manufacture emploie près 250 ouvriers, elle restera active jusqu’en 1950 et les bâtiments sont démolis 4 ans plus tard. Durant toute la durée de ses activités, près de deux siècles, l’établissement employait des ouvriers dont la plupart appartenaient à de vieilles familles de faïenciers, car à Nimy, on l’était de père en fils.&nbsp; Outre les articles de ménage, la faïencerie fabriquait des flambeaux ornés de figures, des groupes en biscuit «Belgique et Champêtre», tels qu’on peut en voir dans ce trompe-l’oeil. Dans ce registre, n’oublions pas les pipes à têtes de femmes, de vieillards ou parfois même aux sujets érotiques. Une véritable économie locale se développe autour de cette thématique empreint d’une particularité artistique dans la décoration des «têtes de pipes» qui a animé la Cité de Nimy jusqu’au début du siècle passé; ces objets absolument uniques en leur genre sont hélas totalement oubliés aujourd’hui. Enfin notre regard est attiré par une plaque commémorative, elle célèbre le courage du Lieutenant Dease et du soldat Godley. Elle se trouve à proximité du pont de Nimy. Il s’agit là d’un fait historique important qui appartient autant à la mémoire collective des nimysiens qu’à celle des Anglais. En effet, la première Victoria Cross décernée par le gouvernement anglais pendant la Grande Guerre récompense la vaillance du soldat Godley,qui parvint à défendre seul le pont de Nimy face à l’ennemi allemand en surnombre; et ce, durant près de deux heures. Ce fait d’arme donna la possibilité à son bataillon de retraiter sans perte. Prenons aussi le temps de regarder chaque ouvrage, chacun raconte un fragment d’histoire qui relie Nimy à Mons...&nbsp;</p><p>----------------------------------------------------------</p><p>Jan is de Man specialises in depicting monumental libraries, which he paints in trompe-l'oeil on the façades of major cities. The location chosen for this fresco is symbolic, as it occupies a gable near the Place de Nimy on the axis of one of Mons' main entrances. The Bibliothèque de Nimy, as it is known, is impressive as much for the style and scale of the fresco, which takes over the entire surface of the wall, as for the riches it reveals. Indeed, the interest here lies not so much in the technical prowess as in the iconography that the artist has taken care to detail on each level of the fresco. Nothing is left to chance! The library is the most intimate and precious space we can have at home; it contains hidden treasures, often forgotten, buried in our memories. It also preserves accumulated knowledge and stories read and passed down from father to son... On the other hand, public libraries, like museums, preserve a shared history within them. This collective memory of Nimy is the primary subject of this fresco. This trompe-l'oeil on the urban scale, on the street side, brings back to life a history that is as intimate as it is forgotten; it belongs to the families of this town at the foot of Mons. The history of Nimy is ungrateful in more ways than one, because it is often too closely associated with the history of Mons. </p><p>Their histories often intersect and intertwine: that of the ramparts, the chapter of Sainte-Waudru, the passage of the Haine, industrialisation and the great battles. The village of Nimy is located on the road to Brussels, just a few hundred metres from one of the main entrances to the Cité du Doudou. The proximity of Nimy and Mons is such that the housing stock is continuous between the two communes. This geographical location means that Nimy will become a major motorway route, cutting the village in two. Yet this small village has had its hours of glory. The village, which is now mainly residential, was a major centre of the region's industrial life, with ironworks, steelworks, earthenware factories and... clay-pipe factories, a real local speciality that has long borne the names of Nihoul and Scouflaire, heroes of Nimysian craftsmanship. It all began with the creation of an earthenware factory in Nimy around 1789, close to the river Haine and its mills. Our regions were then under the domination of the Austrian Netherlands. During this period, the Nimy earthenware factory was even awarded the prestigious title of ‘Imperial and Royal Factory’ by Joseph II. In 1810, the factory employed around 250 workers. It remained in operation until 1950, when the buildings were demolished 4 years later. </p><p>Throughout its nearly two centuries of activity, the factory employed workers, most of whom belonged to old earthenware-making families, for in Nimy, earthenware was handed down from father to son.  As well as household items, the factory also made figure-adorned torches and groups in ‘Belgique et Champêtre’ biscuit, as can be seen in this trompe-l'oeil. In this register, let's not forget the pipes with heads of women, old men or sometimes even erotic subjects. A veritable local economy developed around this theme, marked by a particular artistic style in the decoration of the ‘pipe heads’ that animated the town of Nimy until the beginning of the last century; these objects, absolutely unique in their kind, have unfortunately been completely forgotten today. Finally, our eyes are drawn to a commemorative plaque celebrating the courage of Lieutenant Dease and Private Godley. It is located near the Nimy bridge. This is an important historical fact that belongs as much to the collective memory of the Nimysians as to that of the English. </p><p>The first Victoria Cross awarded by the British government during the Great War was in recognition of the valour of Private Godley, who single-handedly defended the bridge at Nimy against the outnumbered German enemy for almost two hours. This feat of arms enabled his battalion to retreat without loss. We should also take the time to look at each structure, each of which tells a piece of the story that links Nimy to Mons... </p>

<div>Every Tilburg citizen knows the blue building at the Besterdring where in former days Social Services was located. Jan is de Man turned the building into a train, referring to one of the favorite objects graffiti artists use as a canvas. In time this building will be demolished.</div>

<div>Utrecht based artist Jan Heinsbroek (better known as JanIsDeMan) has taken #iseefaces to another level. While the hashtag was created for Instagram creatives to post objects that remind us of facial expressions, the Dutch artist is making sure that architecture plays the role of teasing people’s brains.</div><div>Turning doors and balconies into mouths, his 3D graffiti murals across houses and buildings are an intervention to the city’s facade. Most of the time, plastic "googly eyes” are painted above doors or in house facades to create a sense of observation, making pedestrians feel watched by funny houses with expressive “faces”.</div><div>In an interview for Bored Panda, JanIsDeMan explained a bit of the concept behind his smiley faces. “I believe people become happier when they see a smile every day”, he said.</div>

<p>Kunstenaar JanIsDeMan (Jan Heinsbroek) schilderde een grote muurschildering op een appartementengebouw in Schothorst, Amersfoort, als onderdeel van het project <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://streetartcities.com/tags/festival/Museum%20Murals"><strong>Museum Murals</strong></a>. Geïnspireerd door de 16e-eeuwse kunstenaar Mathias Withoos, die vaak symbolische beelden als slakken, bloemen en distels gebruikte om thema's van hemel en aarde te vertegenwoordigen, verwerkt Jan deze motieven in een modern ontwerp.</p><p>Hij benadrukt dat Withoos' werk rijk is aan verborgen boodschappen, waarbij bijna elk element betekenis heeft, zoals de distel, die de doornenkroon van Christus symboliseert, en de driekleurige ochtendglorie, die de dag vertegenwoordigt. De slak is bijzonder belangrijk, omdat deze het contrast tussen het aardse en hemelse leven belichaamt en zowel bedachtzaamheid als luiheid weerspiegelt. Jan koos ervoor om zich te concentreren op deze symboliek omdat het resoneert met zijn huidige leven en de hedendaagse tijdsgeest, wat contrasteert met Withoos' tijdperk.</p><p>Nadat hij Withoos' werk had bestudeerd en meerdere ontwerpen had gepresenteerd voor input van de gemeenschap, voltooit Jan nu de muurschildering met ingewikkelde details. Hij is wereldwijd bekend om zijn muurschilderingen en voegt dit werk in Amersfoort, de Europese Stad van het Jaar, toe aan zijn portfolio. Jan chose to focus on this symbolism as it resonates with his current life and the contemporary zeitgeist, contrasting Withoos' era.</p><p>After studying Withoos' work and presenting multiple designs for community input, Jan is now completing the mural with intricate details. Known for murals worldwide, he adds this piece in Amersfoort, the European City of the Year, to his portfolio, marking it as his first work in the city.</p>

<p>En 2020, les élèves de l'école d'Harmignies remportent le concours du "Doudou illustré" avec leur dessin du dragon en puzzle. Depuis 16 éditions, le concours du "Doudou illustré" détermine dans la catégorie "Adultes et adolescents" le visuel officiel du Doudou, décliné sur l’affiche et le t-shirt officiels de la Ducasse de Mons ainsi que dans la catégorie "Enfants", le visuel qui rehaussera les t-shirts du petit public de la corde du Petit Lumeçon. Les festivités du Doudou n'ayant pas eu lieu en 2020 en raison de la pandémie de Covid, la réalisation gagnante des enfants a été déclinée sur un tote bag en vente à la boutique de l'Office du Tourisme de la Ville de Mons.<br>&nbsp;<br>Aujourd’hui, le dessin est représenté en grandeur nature sur les murs de leur école par l’artiste Jan is de Man.&nbsp;</p><p>----------------------------------------------------------</p><p>In 2020, pupils from Harmignies school won the ‘Doudou illustré’ competition with their puzzle drawing of the dragon. For the past 16 editions, the ‘Doudou illustré’ competition has determined the official Doudou design in the ‘Adults and teenagers’ category, which will be used on the official Ducasse de Mons poster and t-shirt, and the design in the ‘Children’ category, which will be used on the t-shirts of the small audience at the Petit Lumeçon. As the Doudou festivities will not be taking place in 2020 due to the Covid pandemic, the children's winning design has been reproduced on a tote bag on sale at the Mons Tourist Office shop.</p><p>Today, the drawing is depicted in life-size on the walls of their school by the artist Jan is de Man. </p>

<div>The 'empty bookcase' is opposite the library in the Walthamstow district. A neighborhood where many residents are not well off. The library is therefore very important to these people. Nevertheless, the government has decided to close this library. Due to budget cuts.. It is a major setback for the residents and it makes the step to get books (for themselves or for their children) even bigger. Each stack of books in this 'empty bookcase' tells a personal story and comes from the residents who in turn have been allowed to read these books thanks to the library.</div>

<p>Janisdeman is known for his works that uses its environment and interacts with it. The same goes for the rocket he painted on the elevator shaft of this building. If you look at this mural from the exact right spot, it looks like it is one with the building, with the windows and lines lining up perfectly.</p><p>There is a couple of nice details in the work, like the reflection of the city in the windows of the rocket, and the control panel hidden away on the backside of the work.</p>
